BUILDING:
The building was designed and built by architect József Jahn for his own use in 1895.
The former Elite Café opened on the lower two floors of the house and took the name Ostende in 1909. The venue became famous as a literary salon for the prominent journal Nyugat (West) and as one of the birthplaces of Hungarian cabaret.
From 1959, the legendary Csillag (Star) Department Store operated here, whose spiral neon sign is still remembered by many long-time Budapest residents today.
In 2013, the exterior facade was completely cleaned and restored, returning the building to its former glory. The abandoned, two-story interior space of the former department store was fully renovated to meet modern expectations, and a Tesco Express was established on the ground floor at that time.
