Description

Where the Middle Ages meet contemporary architecture – a uniquely styled villa in Gyula, 478 m²

It is rare to find a property that so confidently blends two seemingly disparate architectural styles on a single plot. From the outside, this villa in Gyula gives the impression of a historicist castle with corner towers – yellow ashlar cladding, carved stone-framed windows, keystones with lion heads, and tiled roofs – but inside, the owner has complemented the original character with bold, contemporary architectural touches.

Above the ground-floor living room (nearly 103 m²), a Gothic-inspired cross vault made of raw, formwork-finished exposed concrete spans the space – as if a centuries-old church interior had met a contemporary Brutalist installation. The space is furnished with antique, inlaid wooden furniture and a black leather seating suite, making the contrast even more striking: the austere geometry of the raw concrete and the warmth of the classic furniture reinforce one another.

The upstairs, round corner tower houses a bedroom with panoramic views of the garden – whilst in the attic tower room, exposed brick and the original timber roof structure evoke the building’s historical layers. In places, the interior spaces feature modern, cantilevered wall sections made of poured concrete – the same use of raw concrete, but on a different scale and serving a different function.

The garage stands as a separate outbuilding on the plot; according to the owner, it was modelled on the architecture of a chapel in Majorkai: a white-plastered façade, a corner tower with a conical tiled roof, a narrow window with a Gothic arch, and, above the garage door, three arched openings decorated with capital columns and wrought-iron grilles – a Mediterranean chapel atmosphere within a functional space.

Within the plot, the building is surrounded by old, spreading trees, stone-paved walkways and a well-tended lawn.

This house does not adhere to a single architectural style, but rather brings together several eras and architectural traditions into a single, coherent whole – an ideal choice for buyers seeking not a run-of-the-mill home, but distinctive, conversation-starting, unique architecture.
