Not just an apartment. The realization of a shared dream.

As a young married couple, we always dreamed of designing and creating a home that would never feel generic. Not a typical “developer apartment.” Not something that looks like every other renovated property on the market. We wanted to create a place with genuine character, soul, and a story behind every detail.

When we first saw this apartment on Vámház Boulevard, most people only saw the problems. Poor condition, endless work, an overwhelming challenge. But we immediately saw what it could become: a piece of history, something rare, something truly special.

This became the biggest project of our lives together.

We invested all of our savings and an incredible amount of energy into it. The apartment was completely stripped down and rebuilt almost entirely from scratch — from the structural layers to the very last switch. Brand new electrical wiring with a 3x20A upgrade, entirely new heating, ventilation, mechanical systems, flooring, windows, and countless custom architectural solutions.

My wife led the design and interior concept, while I managed the project coordination and renovation process. We worked closely with designers and craftsmen, but every single decision passed through us personally. We spent days and sometimes weeks selecting tiles, colors, lighting, fabrics, handles, and decorative details. Our goal was never speed — it was quality.

One of the apartment’s most extraordinary features is the internal lightwell in the center of the home — something incredibly rare to find. We surrounded it with preserved moss panels to create a unique atmosphere unlike anything else. Because of the natural light, the area can function beautifully as a reading corner, yoga space, workspace, or simply as a dramatic architectural centerpiece as it does today. Whenever guests visit, this is the spot that leaves them speechless.

The paintings visible in the apartment were also created by us specifically for these walls. Many of the furniture pieces were custom-made to ensure every centimeter feels functional, harmonious, and elegant. We designed extensive hidden storage while keeping the interiors visually clean and spacious.

The living room is one of the most spectacular parts of the apartment. The extraordinary ceiling height, the natural light pouring through four large windows, and the panoramic views over Kálvin Square and the church tower create a truly unique atmosphere. At the same time, the new triple-glazed wooden windows ensure the apartment remains peaceful and quiet despite the vibrant downtown location. The bonsai olive tree deserves special mention as well — it brings a sense of calmness and life into the space.

Above the open-plan kitchen and living area, we built a completely unique enclosed mezzanine suite. It was important for us that the upper bedroom would feel like a truly separate living space rather than just an open gallery. This way, sounds and kitchen smells remain separated while the apartment still retains its airy and dramatic character thanks to the full-height glass wall.

The glass wall is fitted with retractable curtains, allowing the upper suite to become completely intimate and private whenever desired. The upper level also features its own sink, separate toilet, and a freestanding bathtub directly within the bedroom area. Watching the city lights from here in the evening is a remarkable experience.

We also paid special attention to lighting throughout the apartment. Multiple ambient lighting zones create different moods, while a central “killswitch” system in the entrance hall allows every light in the apartment to be switched on or off with a single touch when leaving or arriving home.

The apartment is fully equipped, and every furnishing is included in the purchase price. The bonsai olive tree, the furniture, and the carefully selected materials and colors together create the calm, elegant atmosphere we wanted to achieve.

Eventually, we named the project “Project Olive” after the bonsai olive tree itself. The green and silver tones of the olive leaves subtly inspired the entire interior palette.

For us, this apartment was never simply a renovation project. It was our first major dream brought to life together. We created a home unlike almost anything else you can find in Budapest.
